He dedicated himself to scientific work, and left a lot of works on botany, zoology, physics and philology, geography, ethnography and philosophy, history and archaeology. At first, his personal life was not successful. Mykhailo could not marry a woman he dreamt about and whom he affectionately\u00a0called \u201cNymphaea Candida\u201d meaning &#8216;the white lily&#8217;. The reason was that she was already engaged. But before her death, Nymphaea Candida made him promise to marry her dowerless daughter, who was 30 years younger than him.
